Wednesday Hodgepodge.

I’m joining Joyce for this week’s Wednesday Hodgepodge! Each week she posts questions to answer and share with others. It’s a fun little prompt, and I am glad to be participating.

1. What does adventure mean to you?
To me, adventure means doing something exciting you’ve never done before. Doing something where you don’t know what’s ahead. You don’t need to hop on a plan to some destination to find adventure. Adventure is everywhere. Try a new meal, walk down a different road in the neighborhood, try something new!

2.  What are your thoughts on tipping? What businesses or service providers do you regularly tip? Do you resent being asked if you’d like to add a tip? What about when a suggested amount is presented?
Tipping is a sore subject with some people! However, it’s not with me. My thoughts on tipping are, I tip 20% to servers at restaurants, my hairstylist, the guy who takes your bags in the airport shuttle, things like that! Now that they’ve started tipping at places like Starbucks drive thru of all places, it drives me insane! To me, a Starbuck’s employee is already getting an hourly wage, way more than servers at a restaurant, so no I am not tipping them. Things like that I do not tip for. A tough question for sure! I typically tip 20% all the time, unless the service is absolutely horrible. If it’s horrible, I’ll do 15%. My brother used to bartend as his only source of income, so I do not believe in tipping any lower than 15%, even if it’s really bad service.

3. I scream you scream we all scream for ice cream…do we? Is ice cream a favorite treat in your house? What’s your favorite flavor? Regular, soft serve, gelato, sherbet, or some sort of non-dairy version of ice cream…what’s your pleasure?
Ice cream is a favorite treat, but we do not have it in the freezer all the time. We like to go to Graeter’s or UDF for ice cream or a good milkshake. My favorite flavor is mint chocolate chip. I like regular ice cream. I’m not a huge fan of soft serve, but my daughter Hadley loves soft serve! I love hot fudge sundae’s at UDF, no nuts, and extra hot fudge with mint chocolate chip ice cream! Soo good!

4. What’s your ‘back in my day we, __________ ‘story or saying?
My back in the day we, story is how my brother and I used to play outside all day long in the summer. Both of my parents worked. We would ride our bikes up to the swim club and I would do swim team practice in the morning. We would ride our bikes back home, and wait for the pool to open, and then ride our bikes back to the pool and swim all day long. We would eat lunch there, and sometimes even dinner. I remember going up to the snack bar and getting a grilled cheese, and a snicker’s ice cream bar. We would live at the pool! And then during the school year, we would play outside on the weekends with the neighbor kids. Back then, you could tell where the kids were based on what bikes were at the house. We would play kick the can, play soccer games, all the things, it was such a fun childhood. Now I am sad for my kids, I’m afraid to even let them play outside alone until one of us can be outside with them.

5. Somehow this is our last Hodgepodge for the month of June. Next week’s Hodgepodge lands in July. Wow. Sum up your June using three adjectives.
1. Hot.
2. Softball.
3. Pool.

6. Insert your own random thought here.
Question number four was my favorite! I love looking back on things like that!

  1. #4 was my favorite as well! I loved your answer to this one. Life was so much simpler back then. The good ol’ days! Happy Summer!

  2. That is exactly how I think about adventure, it doesn’t have to be big scary things. Little every day things which are new are just as good!
Your summers sound like so much fun! When I was a kid it was all about being outside all day. I totally get you, it doesn’t feel safe for children to play outside now without adult supervision.

  3. My sister and I used to love the frozen milky way candy bars at our pool snack bar. And the giant sweet tarts! Just thinking about eating one of those now makes my teeth hurt. We loved the pool and we rode our bikes there too. It was a few miles, but through a neighborhood. What a sense of independence we developed from that experience. We occasionally see Graeters in our grocery, but not often. I love their peppermint at Christmas time. Have a nice rest of the week!
