I’m starting a movie series each month this year, by doing different genres! Next up, my favorite based on a true story movies!

ALIVE.

DREAMER.
Kurt Russell and Dakota Fanning star as a horse trainer and his inspiring young daughter Cale whose determination to help an injured racehorse changes their lives forever. Movie can be found here.

ERIN BROCKOVICH.
A real woman. A real story. A real triumph. Julia Roberts stars as Erin Brockovich, a feisty young mother who fought for justice any way she knew how. Desperate for a job to support herself and her three children, she convinces attorney Ed Masry (Albert Finney) to hire her, and promptly stumbles upon a monumental law case against a giant corporation. Now, Erin’s determined to take on this powerful adversary even though no law firm has dared to do it before. And while Ed doesn’t want anything to do with the case, Erin won’t take “no” for an answer. So the two begin an incredible and sometimes hilarious fight that will bring a small town to its feet and a huge company to its knees. Movie can be found here.

FREEDOM WRITERS.
A young anthropologist Dian Fossey (Sigourney Waver) who travels to the African mountains to study the rare gorillas. In this incredible paradise which she describes as being “as close to God as you can get,” her interest in the gorillas turns to passion and finally obsession. Not even her lover, photographer Bob Campbell (Bryan Brown), can tear her away – or stop her from risking her life to protect the gorillas from poachers and animal traders. Desperate to save her “family” from extinction, Fossey searches for justice, but in the end settles for revenge. You may applaud what she does. Or you may condemn it. But you will never forget the passion that turned her into a legend. Movie can be found here.

GORILLAS IN THE MIST.
Hilary Swank stars in this story about a teacher in a racially divided school who gives her students what they’ve always needed – a voice. Swank plays Erin Gruwell, the real-life teacher at Long Beach’s Wilson High who inspired her students to overcome the gangs that divided them and the education system that forgot them. Based on the book The Freedom Writers Diary and supported by a cast of first-time actors who drew from their actual experiences on the street, Gruwell teaches us all an important lesson about tolerance and trust. Movie can be found here.

INSTANT FAMILY.
The day came when once happily childless house-flippers Pete and Ellie Wagner (Mark Wahlberg, Rose Byrne) took a hard look at their lives, and chose to open home and hearts to a foster kid. They found the troubled teen (Isabela Moner) they settled on was a package deal with two no-less-challenged younger sibs (Gustavo Quiroz Jr., Julianna Gamiz)… and they had to dog-paddle fast in the deep end of parenting. Movie can be found here.

JULIE & JULIA.
A culinary legend provides a frustrated office worker with a new recipe for life in Julie & Julia, the true stories of how Julia Child’s (Meryl Streep) life and cookbook inspired fledgling writer Julie Powell (Amy Adams) to whip up 524 recipes in 365 days and introduce a new generation to the magic of French cooking. LA BAMBA.
The life of rock & roll legend Richie Valens bursts across the screen in this celebrated, music-filled movie with star-making performances by Lou Diamond Phillips as Richie and Esai Morales as his half-brother, Bob. When she is assigned to clean up the K9 unit after a disciplinary hearing, Leavey identifies with a particularly aggressive dog, Rex, and is given the chance to train him. Over the course of their service, Megan and Rex completed more than 100 missions until an IED explosion injures them, putting their fate in jeopardy. Movie can be found here.

MILLION DOLLAR BABY.
“I DON’T TRAIN GIRLS”, trainer Frankie Dunn growls. But something’s different about the spirited boxing hopeful who shows up daily at Dunn’s gym. All she wants is a fighting chance. Clint Eastwood plays Dunn and directs, produces and composes music for this acclaimed, multi-award-winning tale of heart, hope and family. Hilary Swank plays resilient Maggie, determined not to abandon her one dream. And Morgan Freeman is Scrap, gym caretaker and counterpoint to Dunn’s crustiness. Grab your dreams and come out swinging.
